A Different Kind of Fall

It was my Birthday week so it was kinda nonstop celebration. They brought some great food to eat after our morning devotional, gave me some cute and fun gifts and fussed over me. It was also got lots of fun calls and love from family and home. I have also been telling everyone that I am on BIRTHday CONTROL....so  that I am not getting any older.

The cute plumeria pillowcase that the settlement sisters made for me to match my new room.

I got moved into my new apartment, THE TURTLE HOUSE, the same day Shelley Petersen came to the mission so we are now roommates. Also a long time friend from over 50 years ago when Bruce and I were friends with her and her husband came to the same mission arriving with Shelley. Her name is Sharla Behan and she lives somewhere else however.

We went on Halloween night to a huge Halloween Dance Contest that was put on by all the kids that work at the  "Ha Breathe of Life Night Show " and some of the other students from the villages. It was a " Fright Night " theme and 4 groups of about 30 to 50 each did some amazing  theatrical dancing. A most interesting part was the opening prayer before the show....to keep everyone safe.LOL  It was completely packed. Hazel was there  too ...They also had a big dance afterwards. What a huge energized group with a whole bunch of families from Laie supporting this annual event with lots of cheering and clapping and GEEHOOS......Loud Tongan cheers.

Hazel and Siosi were there somewhere....Way on the other side and the place was packed hysteria !!

We attended a band concert that we arrive way too early for at the big theater.  It FINALLY started and we couldn't even hear ourselves think so we stepped out for ice-cream and listened to the rest of it outside the theater... I guess we are all REALLY OLD.....RIGHT?????

We went to a theater production on campus  it was a comedy called " You Can't Take it With You". Sister Greiner, one of the sister missionaries was in it. It was really funny.

Theses girls got a ukulele lesson from an expert and did a great rendition of "You are my Sunshine"

We attended the Birthday Celebration for the Iosepa Canoe that has the same birthday as me...November 3, 2001. They celebrated the handcrafting of this amazing vessel over 30 years ago.  They had a voyage with it last summer which was to host some famous and important people. The canoe which is 54 feet long resides in the PCC Hawaiian village.
From it's history, the tradition of canoe building became more than just
a practical skill – it became a symbol of resistance and cultural pride. “In the face of adversity, Polynesians continued to work on their craft, passing down their knowledge and expertise from generation to generation, ensuring the flame of Iosepa Canoes would never be extinguished.
The Iosepa, the Hawaiian word for Joseph, shares its name with Joseph F. Smith because of his connections to Laie and the Polynesian Utah settlement of the same name, says BYUH’s website. Iosepa also shares the name with other scriptural figures and people of significance to our faith.

My last little story is about a cute little Chinese gal Fiona Li who I taught ukulele lessons to. We got visiting, as you do, or as I do. She is a student from China going to school in Australia and saved her money for a BIG trip. She is all by herself travelling and staying in youth hostels. First here then Los Angeles, then Panama, then Peru. Barely speaks English. Long crazy story. I was where was supposed to be, at the right time and now I am her surrogate Grandma Joan.  Story to follow.....
